Bernhard Martin

First came Postmodernism. Then there came Photoshop. But, what if these languages were used to create an analog fantasy instead? One where mass culture shares a backdrop with art historical citations and boundaries are always shifting? Welcome to life according to German painter Bernhard Martin.

Martin has spent the last 20 years creating a unique visual world where lowbrow mingles with highbrow, freedom is defined outside of the system, and pictorial style is determined by the subject matter at hand. His extravagant narratives combine influences that feed into a bizarre and unfathomable alternate reality, one where everyone from Renaissance masters to Francis Bacon and Picasso act as advisors to a deeply personal deconstruction of the medium of painting itself.

Martin’s conceptual approach to painting has rewritten the rules of the game—an staggering achievement he has been recognized for with Berlin’s distinguished 2015 Fred Thieler Prize for Painting and the first exhibition which took place at the newly reopened Berlinische Galerie.

Im Immer, 2015

A remarkable series that brings the artist’s idiosyncratic style to a musing on the nature of the deadly sins, the impetus behind Bernhard Martin’s Im Immer originated in the controversy surrounding French writer Michel Houellebecq’s novels.

Characteristic of Martin’s unique form of narrative expression, the series incorporates era-defying visual sampling—think of Hans Baldung Grien and Gustave Doré working alongside comic artist Moebius—into a fantasy world of amusement parks, resorts, and experimental landscapes populated by figures engaged in unbridled acts across every facet of human experience.

Originally created using acrylic on paper between 2012 and 2015 and part of Martin’s exhibition at the Berlinische Galerie, Amazing Editions proudly offers the series as a special edition of offset prints. Our exclusive editions of the Im Immer series are produced in cooperation with the Berlinische Galerie and are coated with Iriodin lacquer, lending a magical, diamond dust quality to the surface of these intriguing works. Offered both individually and in a set of seven, Im Immer’s delightful and puzzling imagery is a highlight in this rising artist’s already impressive oeuvre.
