Gerwald Rockenschaub

Pop, Op, Color Field, Minimalism, Conceptual art and Neo-Expressionism. By the 1980s, the question facing artists was a tough one: how can modern art history be integrated into a new visual and theoretical language to reflect very different times? Neo-Geo gave this Postmodernist spirit an socially and aesthetically engaged heart—and Gerwald Rockenschaub is one of the movements most renowned European figures.

Born in Linz in 1952, the Berlin-based Austrian artist’s unique take on minimalism has resulted in a complex sculptural oeuvre that challenges the so-called white cube and calls the relationship between the artwork, viewer, and exhibition space into question everywhere from Documenta 12 and the 1993 Venice Biennial's Austrian Pavilion to Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg (2011), Kunsthalle Bern (2008), and Vienna's mumok (2004).

Rockenschaub’s works in animation, painting, sculpture, and site-specific installation use radical reduction and concentration to push the formal vocabulary of the abstract avant-garde, but never strays into the color palette of more staid academia. Bright, celebratory, and defying easy categorization, Rockenschaub’s works are as fresh as they are thought provoking.
