It can be hard to find a line between the natural world and modern life, yet Swedish artist Henrik Håkansson (*1968) forges his own path between the two in a practice that includes video, photography, text, sound, painting, and performance as well as his renowned installations. Håkansson’s works assume the role of a philosophical discussion as much as the presentation of an unproven theory, calling the emotionally and intellectually curious to the center of their captivating worlds. Suspended trees, truncated forests, or insects caught between their own instinct and human intervention, Håkansson dissects the systems of nature while allowing his tree, insect, and small animal protagonists to retain their autonomous identity—even as he shapes the frame through which his viewers encounter them.
A fascinating blend of aesthetic mastery, romanticism, and scientific wonder, Håkansson’s works have been widely exhibited across Europe, including De Appel in Amsterdam, the Secession in Vienna and most recently in his solo show A Tree (Suspended) at Kunstverein Freiburg.

Birds, bats, and insects have featured at the center of many a Henrik Håkansson, a recurring cast of characters whose behavior and movements form the underpinning patterns of the artist’s works. A series of 18 individual photographs presented on a single pigment print on paper, June 7, 2013 (2016) sees this motif return to perfectly showcase Håkansson’s rare fusion of observational neutrality and romantic ambiguity. With a background that forms a subtle grid as the edge of one photograph touches another, the focus remains on a single fly captured in different moments of flight—a fly that in these instants could be mistaken for a bee, a lone representative for the uncertainty of our perception.
