Dennis Loesch

Art is little if not a matter a perception. It’s a truism German artist Dennis Loesch tackles with the spirit of a post-digital impressionist, recreating it to speak through his own innovative practice.

Born in Frankfurt am Main in 1979, the Berlin-based artist is among the first wave of a new generation of artists—those raised on the internet, new technologies, and with a visual sensibility to match—establishing an international gallery reputation. Loesch’s own contribution to these debates is little short of extraordinary. Whether opening up the image plane to new perspectives in his ongoing sculptural series called Memory Sticks, exploring the mechanisms of printed media in his Gradients series, or launching a semiotic attack on digital antiquity with playfully sized SD cards, Loesch’s carefully balanced nods to classical Minimalism—think Donald Judd and Dan Flavin—have earned him exhibitions everywhere from Berlin to Los Angeles, including exhibitions at Dittrich & Schlechtriem Berlin and PM/AM London.

CMYW, 2015

CMYW, 2015 sees Dennis Loesch isolate the signature aluminium forms of his Memory Sticks and Gradients series into a single piece with iconic potential from this rising artist.

Perhaps ambiguous to those unfamiliar with printing, the title of the work is a reference to an innovative new digital method. Including the white ink once missing in the traditional CMYK ink jet printing method, this technique is revolutionizing the possibilities of digital printing—and naturally sparked Loesch’s obsession with the mechanics of the visual world. Created by glueing three ink jet prints to an aluminium beam before coating it multiple times with a transparent matte lacquer, CMYW, 2015 is easily hung in any direction you please and displays the gradient color tones of this printing method as a striking three-dimensional object.

Like much of Loesch’s body of work, this intriguing piece straddles the worlds of painting, sculpture, and graphic design with as much ease as it updates the formal codes of High Modernism for the post-digital era—an artistic feat of both aesthetic and intellectual integrity that all but assures that this Amazing Editions exclusive production is a collector’s piece in the making.
