Saâdane Afif

Can meaning become visible? Post-conceptual French artist Saâdane Afif addresses this question through a cross-media practice that digs deep into the complexities of interpretation and exchange. Focused on the circulation of ideas that takes place between different elements inhabiting the same space, Afif’s exhibitions are often a pretext for a production or performance. Even when presented as objects and sculpture, wall-based text, or neon, Afif’s works remain actively engaging—a slow unveiling of significance in which the viewer performs the final act.

Born in 1970 in Vendôme, France, Afif now resides in Berlin where he is represented by Gallery Mehdi Choukri. Included among the numerous international solo and group exhibitions on his CV, Afif has exhibited at Documenta 12, the 2015 Venice Biennale, Palais de Tokyo, and Centre Pompidou, where he held his exhibition Anthologie de l’humour noir after winning the Prix Marcel Duchamp in 2009.

Deux mille millimètres d'infinis possibles, 2014

Bright, graphic, and abstract, Deux mille millimètres d'infinis possibles (2014) takes the form of a classic wooden folding rule and—exactly as the name suggests—offers two thousand millimeters of infinite possibility to measure the imagination. The ten, fully articulated sections of this sculptural work are easily re-positioned to create an evolving, engaging piece that is easily hung on the wall or displayed on a shelf or table. With Deux mille millimètres d'infinis possibles, Saâdane Afif flawlessly carries the performative aspect of his exhibition works to one designed to literally unfold meaning in a private setting.

This limited edition of 100 objects is constructed in yellow painted wood and brass and is presented in a numbered, natural cardboard box bearing the artist's thumbprint as a signature, the name, and a simple illustrated depiction of the piece it contains. Far from an afterthought, the packaging brings another element to this edition’s complex circle of ideas and interpretation.
