Haleh Redjaian

The line is undoubtably one of the most enduring motifs of modern art. Born in Frankfurt am Main in 1971, German-Iranian artist Haleh Redjaian reimagines the possibilities of this most simple of geometric elements in a practice that holds materiality and physicality at the core of its ethereal expression.

The Berlin-based artist has built a reputation over the last decade for exploring the boundary between contemporary modern aesthetics and the traditions of eastern ornamentation and metaphysics within the framework of a distinct visual vocabulary. Working across paper, textiles, and site-specific wall installations, Redjaian’s body of work unfolds as a delicately balanced series of challenges against the habitual patterns of existence—all the while revealing new options and paths of movement. Recently shown at Arratia Beer during Berlin’s Gallery Weekend, the gallery also presented a unique pairing of Redjaian and recently deceased underground textile artist Friedrich Teepe at this year’s Art Basel.

Untitled, 2014

Untitled, 2014 highlights many central themes in Haleh Redjaian's intriguing study of form and physical space. Printed as a two color lithograph on paper in a very limited edition of just 15 pieces, the visual delicacy of this work embodies Redjaian’s signature aesthetic, while the simplicity of its forms calls special attention to the imperfect grids that populate many of the artist’s works.

The message behind Untitled, 2014’s three-dimensional shadow play and rough rectangular shapes reaches a pinnacle in the fifth row—one is missing altogether. Typical of Redjaian’s discreet acts of formal rebellion, the fact that it appears to be missing emerges as a simple matter of habit and expectation, and not one of unchangeable decree. Subtle actions resonating with the potential for massive consequences: this is the beauty of Redjaian’s body of work and the power behind a special edition, signed and numbered on the front, that Amazing Editions is pleased to offer either framed or unframed.
