Clegg & Guttmann

Clegg & Guttmann have been working at the intersection of art, social structures, and power relations for more than three decades. Born in Dublin and Jerusalem, respectively, in 1957, the artist duo work from their own historical backgrounds to explore this terrain through a “socially communicative” process that often includes their adopted working cities of New York, Berlin, and Vienna. Befitting the complexity their subject matter, the visual expression of their practice takes on a number of forms—sculpture, installation, performance, and photography have all provided the underpinning for the duo’s conceptual and reflective artistic language.

Clegg & Guttmann are known for creating works in ongoing series they term Spontaneous Operas, Social Sculptures, and Community Portraits. Their work has been exhibited internationally at renowned institutions including MUMOK and Secession in Vienna, Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt, and Kunsthaus Graz, as well as in public space. Their exhibition, “120 Jahre nach dem ersten Zionistenkongress,” was on view at Kunstmuseum Basel in 2018.

Small Frozen Ribs, 2007/2013

Small Frozen Ribs sees Clegg & Guttmann bring an extra portion of playfulness to their socially penetrative discourse. Originally created in 2013 for “Photos: Points of View in Austrian Photography from the 1930s until Today” at Vienna’s 21er Haus Museum of Contemporary Art, the artists chose to answer the exhibition’s key question—“what is the current status of Austrian photography, and where is it going?”—with an image that offers a humorous portrait of Austrian art history, from the shimmering gold leaf of Gustav Klimt to the slaughtered animals of the Viennese Actionists. In turn, the tin foil backdrop offers a nostalgic nod to a time when silver gelatin prints were still produced by hand.

Both beautiful and uncomfortable, easily accessible and conceptually dense, Small Frozen Ribs embodies the spirit of the duo’s decades-long collaboration in a humorous dissection of history that balances culture both high and low. A C-Print edition of just 25 copies, it also offers a wonderful opportunity to own a rare edition by this fascinating duo.
