Leonhard Hurzlmeier’s works display a strength that is rooted in their ambiguity. Indisputably contemporary while balancing art historical references and meticulous attention to classical composition, his approach to the tradition of portraiture is at once abstract and figurative, reductive and narrative, personal and anonymous. The flatness of his oil on canvas images is executed with a geometric precision that recalls graphic design software. In doing away with depth of field, Hurzlmeier offers a humorous and provocative critique of our times. His female figures in particular tap into the tropes of the selfie generation—a careful pose, a particular item of clothing, a well-placed prop. Recognizable yet completely unknown, Hurzlmeier invites viewers to question ways of seeing in the social media age while empowering them to reconsider our culture’s aspirations for perfection.
Born in Starnberg, Germany in 1983, Hurzlmeier studied at The Academy of Fine Arts, Munich. He has exhibited at Rachel Uffner Gallery, New York and DUVE Berlin in 2017. His monograph entitled Neue Frauen was published by Hatje Cantz in 2018.

Epitomizing the ambiguity that underpins Hurzlmeier’s body of work, La Mère uses a bold choice of color and flesh-like tones to convey the human form while revealing little about its subject. Gender, age, even the exact position of the body remain open to interpretation—its title, French for mother, gives the only window into the identity of the person whose hand wraps around a white bundle at the center of an egg-shaped composition. Evocative yet anonymous, Hurzlmeier’s La Mere poses more questions than it answers, challenging the social structures that shape the way we see while offering a poignant interpretation of the symbolic weight of fertility and motherhood.
An archival inkjet print on Hahnemühle Photo Rag Ultrasmooth paper, this exclusive collaboration with Amazing Editions is available in a limited edition of 40 prints and four artist’s proofs. The original painting of La Mère (2017) was featured in the artist’s solo exhibition at DUVE Berlin, making this edition a special opportunity to collect a recognizable work by this rising German artist.
